The cylindrical shape is regular and provides for even cooking of the joint. Cooking to get the crackling crispy is an art, not a difficult one - but very satisfying to achieve!

Hard and crispy crackling
Pre-heat your oven, make sure the skin is well scored (butcher!) rub table or sea salt into the skin and roast for your preferred period. At about 15 minutes before the cooking is complete turn up the heat.
If your roasting tray has low sides that will help - and do not cover the joint.
